Welcome to my new blog, detailing my bicycling adventures! Well, I say adventures – you’re not going to get touring holidays, centuries (imperial or metric), sportives, competitions et cetera here. At least, not in the near to mid future – this will be more of an exploratory nature over relatively small distances for the time being.

I’m returning cyclist who, with the exception of the occasional cycle hire, has not been on a bike for the best part of 15 years, and hasn’t owned my own bike for nearer 20 years, since I was a teenager. Sadly, learning to drive confined cycling to history for me, until recently.

I no longer own a car, nor do I feel compelled to run one. I sold my last vehicle many years ago, when moving to a place that couldn’t accommodate two cars. Since then, it’s been sharing my partner’s car, public transport or (rarely) walking.

Now I’m in a place where I can store and use a bicycle easily, I made the decision to get back on two wheels when I realised I need a bit more flexibility in getting about when the single car was not available to me. I also wanted something to help improve my general fitness. I’m stuck behind a desk most days when working so, getting out and about is an important part of reducing the belly!

So, that’s a little bit about me. My first bike as an adult is a Merida hybrid, which I am using on local canal towpaths, gravel routes and on road. I’m not a fast rider, with an average speed of just 10-11mph, slowing to as low as 4mph on some hills, nor do I currently have a massive range, peaking at a round trip of about 24 miles at the time of writing. But I do generally enjoy my rides and it’s that aspect of the hobby that I want to explore – being out for the fun of it, exploring new routes, learning the landscape and finding new places that I would otherwise overlook if I’d been out in the car.

Here, I’ll publish details of rides I’ve enjoyed, with accompanying video where available, with the hope that they’ll prove useful to other cyclists in the area of the route. Maybe there’ll be some comment on cycling in general, tips and tricks as I discover them and reports of dangerous or excellent interactions with other road users and what can be learnt from them.

Thanks for visiting and I hope you enjoy the site. If you find something you like, do please share it, and if you have any comments or suggestions, do drop me a line.
