Video: Coventry’s Binley Cycleway
Just a quick thing...
I have chosen not to use adverts, pop-ups, mailing lists, or mandatory subscriptions, but it means there is an ongoing cost for me in researching and writing content, and generally advocating for active travel - time spent not working! If you can throw a few pounds my way to help out, your support is gratefully received! Thank you!
Take a look at Coventry’s newest separated cycleway running from the University Hospital to just outside of the City Centre. Although this is a roughly 3.4 mile (5.4km) route, it does currently have a gap of about 0.7 miles (1.1km) along Clifford Bridge Road where infrastructure is yet to be built.
This city-bound ride is shown at 2x speed, except for the on-road section and a wait at traffic lights which are at 4x speed. It was recorded on Sunday 08 October 2023 at about 4pm.
@ben that first section is bordering on NL-level. Pretty sure some of the bicycle Dutch videos look like that!Shame about the on-road 💩 I can't imagine coming the other way and cutting across multiple lanes to join the cycle lane is fun at all.
Yes, for the UK it’s really good. I could be a little critical about some aspects of this, and if I get around to it I’ll do a proper write-up, but those are really rather small. Other than the elephant in the room that is “the gap”, of course! It should be filled; it’s not been designed to have a gap, and the route should be continuous. It’s just run up against a hurdle with local residents kicking up a fuss. I hope the City Council stands firm and builds it as planned, but at the very least there’s talk of a downgraded shared-use path to link the sections (better than nothing, but still not good enough).
