The barrier complaint – an update

Earlier this year I entered into a protracted complaint with the County Council about the sudden installation of a chicane barrier on a short piece of path that is vital for accessing a formal shared use route. Counting from the date of installation, the matter has been going on for almost seven months, so here’s a quick update.

Escalated complaint still ignored by Council

The seemingly unending chicane barrier issue raised with Warwickshire County Council continues as a manager finally responds to the escalated complaint detailed back in July. It’s taken a long time, and a lot of chasing to get this reply – but which still fails to properly consider the points originally raised back on 16 May 2024. To briefly recap, in

The continuing saga of a chicane barrier

Chronicling the protracted continuing saga of a new chicane barrier, installed suddenly and without warning in April 2024 by Warwickshire County Council, on a short path close to a formal shared use walking and cycling route – but without proper consideration to current legislation, design standards for accessibility, or its own policies regarding transport and active travel.

Accessibility fail for Network Rail

In an attempt to reduce instances of flytipping on its land, Network Rail has installed a new locked gate on Stoney Road, Nuneaton – part of National Cycle Network Route 52. However, while there is a gap to the side of the new barrier, it does not comply with current accessibility guidelines.

Council agree to replace inaccessible barrier

In May this year, Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council started shutting an inaccessible barrier across the access road to its Museum and Art Gallery/Registry Office and main town centre park, Riversley Park. This created an obstruction on a National Cycle Network route. Now, the Council have agreed to implement an accessible solution!

Council Shuts the Gate on Cycle Route

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council has announced on social media that it will begin securing an access road against motor traffic outside of the opening hours of Nuneaton’s Registry Office. At 5pm every night, a gate will be shut, closing off the road leading from the ring road. However, this access road also forms part of a safe off-road cycle route between the town centre and the Whitestone area of town – part of National Cycle Network Route 52.

NBBC – Remove Your Restrictions!

With Sustrans wanting to improve its National Cycle Network including through the removal of discriminatory obstructions that hinder legitimate access, it would be nice if Nuneaton & Bedworth Borough Council would get on board with improving the sections of routes that it controls. Too many obstructions exist on the likes of Weddington Walk, Wembrook Trail, and access to the Coventry

K-Frame Barriers – Part 4: A Director Responds

The ongoing saga relating to access restrictions on cycle paths, specifically Nuneaton’s Weddington Walk (part of National Cycle Network Route 52) continues following receipt of a response to my questions, this time from a Council director. The contents of that reply are copied below. I was a little disappointed that the email was headed ‘Draft’ in the subject, almost like
