State of the Scheme: Nuneaton to Coventry via Bedworth

There is a scheme in Warwickshire to create an active travel corridor between the edge of Nuneaton through Bedworth and down to the border with Coventry – what should be a valuable and obvious backbone route for a cycling network. However, since the approval of funding within the County Council back in November 2019, there has been no public news or update on progress. So, having asked the question, here is an overview of the plan and the state of things as they stand now, two and a half years later.

Council Shuts the Gate on Cycle Route

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council has announced on social media that it will begin securing an access road against motor traffic outside of the opening hours of Nuneaton’s Registry Office. At 5pm every night, a gate will be shut, closing off the road leading from the ring road. NBBC – Remove Your Restrictions!

With Sustrans wanting to improve its National Cycle Network including through the removal of discriminatory obstructions that hinder legitimate access, it would be nice if Nuneaton & Bedworth Borough Council would get on board with improving the sections of routes that it controls. Too many obstructions exist on the likes of Weddington Walk, Wembrook Trail, and access to the Coventry

Leicester Road Gyratory, Nuneaton

Cycling Afterthought for Leicester Road Changes

The latest plans to be released by Warwickshire County Council for the redevelopment of the Leicester Road Gyratory in Nuneaton (Vicarage Street, Back Street, Leicester Road) have been dubbed as an “ovalabout” in local press. While reports note so-called improvements for cycling, the actual published plan is motor-centric and poor for pedestrians and cyclists, failing to meet minimum standards and providing indirect routes.

Bull Ring Junction with Heath End Road and Greenmoor Road, Nuneaton (April 2020)

Junction Redesign Omits Cycling

Warwickshire County Council is proposing to make changes to the junction of Greenmoor Road/Bull Ring/Heath End Road with the aim to improve traffic flow through the congested area. Currently operating as a mini-roundabout, the proposal is to provide traffic signals instead. With the scheme comes new crossing infrastructure for pedestrians – but no accommodation for cycling.
